Why should I use semiconductor strain gauge load cells as opposed to foil gauge units?

Check out our in-depth article comparing semiconductor strain gauges to foil gauges for a detailed explanation of the benefits a semiconductor gauge provides.

Can I use these in “Hazardous Areas”?

The load cells can be used with a Zener Barrier Block which allows them to be used in explosive and hazardous areas.

Can these be washed down?

These load cells are rated IP54 which means they will withstand being wiped down or lightly sprayed. Directly applying a direct jet of water or other solutions is not suggested.

Can they be used in “Clean Room Environments”?

Yes. These load cells do not produce visible dust. However, consider the level of particulate contamination when considering bearing wear. Non-moving load cells such as the U-Series may be a better option.

Are these drop in replacements for “Brand X”?

Generally, yes. These load cells are semi-conductor type load cells which offer enhanced resolution and operate on +/-2.5 VDC excitation and return an average signal of 250mV.

Will these work with “Brand X” Controllers/Amplifiers?

Generally, yes. These load cells are semi-conductor type load cells which offer enhanced resolution and operate on +/-2.5 VDC excitation and return an average signal of 250mV.

Are these load cells intrinsically safe?

When combined with a Zener Barrier Block, yes.

What excitation voltage do these load cells use?

5 VDC (+/- 2.5)

What is the minimum tension I can measure?

Typically, the resolution of the load cells exceeds almost any ability of your peripheral equipment (such as drives, motors, rollers, bearings) to allow for control that would exceed the resolution of the load cells. However, we typically see tension measured accurately at 1/1500th of the load cell scale.

What is the maximum tension I can measure?

The maximum measurable force for ES-Series Load Cells is 1,000 lbs (5,000 N).

What is the lowest/lightest tension I can control to?

We can assure you that it won’t be the load cell that will limit your ability to control fine tension. Other variables such as rollers, motor controllability and other equipment throughout the machine typically pose limitation issues.

What bearings are available? (ES-LR & ES-LS only)

Please refer to the ES-LR or ES-LS product pages for a list of available bearing options.

Can I still get the PT Mount?

The PT style mount is no longer available and was been replaced by our Split Pillow Block Mount (P). Even though the bracket has changed, the load cell can be replaced without having to change the bracket. See the current “ES Series Datasheet or Drawing” to ensure your existing load cell is the same dimensionally as the current load cell (Some older style load cells have some slightly different dimensions that may affect compatibility with the PT Bracket.
