When is an ultrasonic sensor needed?

When an accurate diameter of the roll is necessary.

Why is the ultrasonic sensor sometimes preferred over the follower arm pot?

Since the follower arm must “ride” on the roll of material, it can possibly damage the material. It also often interferes with with the operator changing the roll and often gets bent.

How does the ultrasonic sensor maintain constant tension?

It can be used in conjunction with an open loop controller to change the torque applied to the roll proportional to the diameter. If this ratio is maintained the tension will remain constant.

How is the ultrasonic sensor adjusted for different diameter rolls?

It is calibrated for the minimum and maximum roll diameters that are possible to run on the machine
